Indigenous Education

Elkford Secondary acknowledges that we operate on the homelands of the Ktunaxa Nation. School staff value the history of First Nations, Inuit and Metis, the impact the past has on the future, and are dedicated to reconciliation and healing.

The Indigenous Education Program at Elkford Secondary is committed to increasing awareness, appreciation and understanding the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada. We work towards integrating an aboriginal perspective into learning. All Indigenous students are provided with equal opportunity to achieve academic success, cultural awareness, and a sense of belonging.

The Indigenous Education Support Worker (IESW) is responsible for monitoring attendance and academic achievement, facilitating cultural experiences and opportunities as well as helping with social/emotional well-being, group and individual support, acting as a liaison between home and school, providing family support, managing behavioral issues and directing students to appropriate services as necessary. Students will have opportunities to learn, share and take pride in their culture and other Indigenous cultures of Canada. All Indigenous students will have access to a Welcoming Space that encourages a sense of belonging.

Brenda Newlove is the Indigenous Education Support Worker (IESW) for Elkford Secondary School. Brenda can be contacted at:

Indigenous families are encouraged to read the Indigenous Education Enhancement Agreement ; a document created and signed by SD 5; Southeast Kootenay staff, the Ktunaxa Nation, the Metis Nation of BC, Urban Aboriginals, and the Ministry of Education.
