Ski and snowboard are very popular sports with our international students!  There are two excellent ski resorts in our area.  Our Fernie and Sparwood students ski at the famous Fernie Alpine Resort, which is located only 5 minutes from Fernie, and has been rated by Outdoor Magazine as the second best ski resort in Canada.  Our Cranbrook students ski at the outstanding Kimberley Alpine Resort which is located only 25 minutes from Cranbrook.

The ski season in the Southeast Kootenay region runs from early December to mid April.

Ski Buses

To make it easy for our Cranbrook students to get to the Kimberley ski hill, we offer a special ski bus on most weekend and holiday days during the ski season.  Usually we run about 45 ski bus trips during each ski season.  At other times, rides can be arranged amongst host families.

Season Passes

Most students who plan to ski more than 11 or 12 times during their stay purchase a youth season ski pass in early June to get the cheapest price.  Depending on when the pass is purchased, a season pass for the Kimberley Alpine Resort costs between $530 and $750 and, for Fernie, costs between $700 and $1,100.  Generally, ski pass
prices increase in June and October.Sabrina Wrinkle Nose 3S.jpg

Fernie season passes and Kimberley season passes can be purchased online.  Waivers for students 16 or older can also be signed on line.  For students 15 or younger, the Director of the International Education Program will sign the waiver form on behalf of the natural parents.

RCR Rockies Card

Students who plan to ski fewer than 11 or 12 times may consider purchasing the RCR Rockies Card for about $90 that gives cardholders their 1st, 3rd and 7th days of ski and snowboard free, plus a discount on their lift tickets on other days.  RCR Rockies Cards are on sale from October to late December.

Ski Equipment

It can be very expensive to transport ski equipment with the student by airplane.  Considering that, most students purchase used equipment once they get here and then resell it before they leave.  Some students are able to borrow equipment from their host family or family friends.

Spring SplashFlorian Peterhaensel 7S.jpg

At the end of each ski season, many international students participate in the annual Spring Splash events at the Fernie and Kimberley ski resorts.  Participants ski or snowboard down a short slope and try either to ski across a small pond or make the biggest splash in the ice-cold water!  It's crazy fun!
