Schools

International students regularly attend six schools in the Southeast Kootenay School District.  In Cranbrook, the choices are  Mount Baker Secondary School (Grades 10 to 12), Parkland Middle School (Grades 7 to 9) and Laurie Middle School (Grades 7 to 9).  Other schools include Fernie Secondary School (Grades 7 to 12), Sparwood Secondary School (Grades 7 to 12) and Elkford Secondary School (Grades 7 to 12), in the cities of Fernie, Sparwood and Elkford respectively.

School Year

In the Southeast Kootenay School District, the school year is broken down into two semesters.  Semester 1 begins in early September and ends in late January, and Semester 2 runs from early February to late June.  The main school vacations include the two-week Christmas break and the two week Spring Break in mid March.  The complete details of the school year can be found in the School Calendar.

High School Courses

Canadian high school students start grades 10, 11 or 12 in September of the calendar year they turn 15, 16 or 17.  International high school students who are studying for one school year or less are not assigned to a grade level and may take any courses they need or would enjoy, as long as the courses are appropriate for their English ability and their academic background.  However, we recommend that all international students include Mathematics and English in their course selection.

Students usually take four courses in one semester and a different four courses in their next semester, but if necessary (e.g. for Brazilian students), a fifth course can be arranged.  Course selection information will be sent to students several months before the beginning of their school program.
