As of June 1, 2020, both the Fernie Campus and Cranbrook Campus of KDS will be  allowing students into the buildings to do tests, meet with teachers or get work. Distancing protocols will be in effect. We will be allowing only 4 students in at one time, keyboards and surfaces will be wiped down regularly and hand sanitizing stations will be set up. Information

Contact us to learn  more about our Middle School Blended Home Learning program starting in September 2020.

We are making some changes to our full-time program for Middle School students ( grades 5-9)  starting in September 2020. After careful review, we have determined that these changes will better enable our students to be successful.

  • Students will be enabled to demonstrate their learning in a multitude of ways, but their  progress will be closely monitored and they must submit evidence of work (eg. assignment, test, learning guide) every week
    • Students will be provided with a subject plan that lists all of the curricular competencies for their current courses (as prescribed by the Ministry of Education).
      • Students will be exposed to all of these competencies through KDS content on Moodle.
      • Individual learning goals will be established, forming a roadmap for learning and assessment.
      • Students may choose to develop and complete independent projects as an alternative/supplement to the provided Moodle content, in consultation with their teacher.
      • See attached "sample subject plan."
    • Students must make and submit a weekly learning plan, stating what they will accomplish the following week and when they will be working. See attached "KDS weekly learning plan."
      • Note that the attached spreadsheet is simply one way of creating a learning plan.  A paper version will also be supplied, and student created versions will be accepted.
  • Students will be required to attend KDS facilities a minimum of 1 hour per week, for a face-to-face session with their teacher (Home visits will be offered for students who are unable to attend due to mental/physical health and other significant obstacles)
    • Students can utilize this time for personalized lessons, feedback or self-study with teacher support
    • Sessions will be scheduled in advance to ensure social distancing
    • No cell phones are allowed while accessing KDS facilities.  A charging station will be provided and students can use their phones on breaks only.
  • Students who do not attend their face-to-face session, or submit their learning plans and sufficient evidence of work in a given 3 week period will lose access to the KDS program (exceptions for extenuating circumstances will be considered)

The above is just the start of our new program; once the Covid-19 crisis has passed, we will be extending our focus on a blended learning model:

  • KDS will be open for drop-in according to the following schedule:
    • Collaboration time: Mon, Wed, Fri afternoons (12:30-3:30); Tues, Thurs mornings (8:30-11:30)
      • working with other students, working with teacher (sessions as outlined above); opportunities for synchronous activities (eg. Genius hour)
    • Self-study time: Mon, Wed, Fri mornings (8:30-11:30); Tues, Thurs afternoons (12:30-3:30)
      • quiet space to complete work
  • Scheduling extra-curricular activities (eg. field trips, guest speakers)
  • Promoting connections between students (eg. peer(s) to check in with on a regular basis to help with motivation)
