School Counsellor

Katie Keast, the school counsellor at Elkford Secondary, works three days at ESS and two days at RMES.  She has many roles within our school.  Some of these include;

  • Graduation planning
    • Katie helps ensure students know what they need to graduate, how to apply to college or university and helps with scholarship applications.
  • Course selection
    • Katie helps students navigate post-secondary websites to learn what they need to take in High School to get into the programs of their choice.
  • Individual counselling
    • Students would see Katie if they have a recent diagnosis, consistent disruptive change in behavior, or if they have overwhelming feelings of sadness, anger or worries.
    • It is the student's choice if they want to see Katie.  They are never required to see her for social/emotional support.
    • All individually counselling is confidential.
  • Group counselling
    • Katie runs a few different groups across grade levels along different subjects throughout the year.
  • Parent advice and counselling
    • Katie will work with parents over the phone, or in person, on different ways that they can support their child.  She will not create more work for you, and instead teach you how to do things differently.  All that you need is a 1% change to make a difference.
  • Health education
    • Katie does presentations in PE for grades 7-12 on the health curriculum.

If you are still wondering if school counselling is appropriate for your child you can check out this sd5 document:
