School Counsellor

District Indigenous Support Counsellor 

Our District Indigenous Support Counsellor is Alissa Amos. She can be reached through the following avenues:

Counselling at Laurie Middle School is done primarily through self-referral. Students, their guardians, and Laurie Middle School staff may contact the counsellor via telephone, email, or by scheduling an appointment in the counselling office.

Please visit Ms. Sommerfeld during nutrition break or lunch time to schedule an appointment with her. Once you have your appointment, it is your responsibility to arrive with permission and on time from your class. Ms. Sommerfeld will not be coming to get you.

Please note, Counsellors may only check email during school hours. It may take up to 48 hours to hear back. If you are a parent and your concern is urgent, please contact the office. If the student is in need of immediate support and the counsellor is not available, please reach out to one of the resources listed below.

  • Cost-free counselling for children and youth in Cranbrook 
  • Phone 250-426-1514 ext. 9am-noon or 1pm-4pm Monday to Friday to schedule an intake appointment 

Ktunaxa/Kinbasket Child and Family Services Society (KKCFSS) 

  • A variety of cost-free counselling services for children and families 
  • Walk-in intakes are available Fridays from 10am – 2pm at KNC Health Centre, #32 9th Avenue (no appointment necessary). Alternative arrangements are available should the walk-in time present significant barriers, please call (250) 489-4563 ext. 4021.

Foundry East Kootenay

  • Foundry East Kootenay provides accessible early intervention, mental health, substance use, peer support, primary care, and social services to youth (age 12-24) in Cranbrook and the surrounding area.  Call (778) 517-8658 or visit us at 100 – 12th Ave, Cranbrook, BC.
