Senior Sculpture Class at Fernie Secondary

As schools approach the end of the first semester, the Art and Photography teacher at Fernie Secondary would like to take a moment to look back and reflect on the Senior Sculpture class. This course was offered for the first time at Fernie Secondary School.
Students learned the fundamentals of sculpture building and explored the history of the discipline. More importantly, they worked with a wide range of materials, including recycled objects, clay, driftwood, wire, and papier-mâché. Through this process, they quickly discovered that each medium requires a unique approach and demands flexibility, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
By connecting the studies to Land Art and Indigenous Ways of Knowing, students came to understand the importance of cultural context—how these practices have evolved over centuries, and how the here and now, become part of that ongoing dialogue through creative work and the impact it may have on others and our environment.
