Kootenay Discovery School
Our Programs
Kootenay Discovery School and Kootenay Learning Campus
offer programs for every age of student.

Flexibility is our mantra! We know that every learner is unique, and connections are as important as curriculum.

Kootenay Discovery School is ideal for students and parents who want flexibility in scheduling, programming and individualized, project-based learning opportunities. We follow the BC Ministry of Education curriculum, and our teachers work closely with our learner’s families to support and guide the learning that is happening at home.

Teachers work with parents and students at the start of each school year to develop a plan which guides instruction and assessment for the coming school year. Parents work with their children on a daily basis to introduce learning opportunities while Kootenay Discovery School teachers guide that process throughout the year, assessing selected work samples and providing feedback. Our blended model also allows opportunities for face to face classroom time, group activities, field trips, and community outings.

Through regular communication, timely feedback and assessment, primary  teachers ensure that families know how their student is progressing towards meeting the grade-level learning objectives.

Kootenay Discovery School primary teachers place an emphasis on supporting the development of strong numeracy and literacy skills for learners in Kindergarten to Grade 6.

We are up for the challenge of engaging the Middle years students! The Kootenay Discovery School Middle Years Team is a team of dedicated, caring teachers committed to your student’s success.

We prioritize:

  • Connection, then content.

  • Flexibility and choice.

  • Project based learning and individualized educational opportunities.

  • 21st century learning, building skills in communication, critical thinking, creative and innovative thinking, and personal and social responsibility.

  • Integrated curriculum, which aims to inspire students to learn while having fun.

  • Opportunities to connect with other learners during our virtual meet ups and f2f collaboration times, with campuses located in both Fernie and Cranbrook.

  • A truly inclusive educational environment, where all learners have a chance to learn at their required pace. Success over schedule.

  • Outdoor Ed Connections!  Opportunities to take the learning outside and apply it in real situations while creating an appreciation for the natural environment that makes up the Kootenays.

  • Access to Special Education resources and support.

  • First Nations (Aboriginal Education) resources, funding, tutoring support, and cultural events.
