Kootenay Discovery School (KDS) hosted its first-ever Forest Graduation this July at the amphitheatre in Kikomun Creek Provincial Park. Set in the natural beauty of the East Kootenays on the living lands of the Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it, the event brought together students, families, and staff to celebrate this important milestone.

We honoured five full-time graduates in attendance and also recognized Grade 6 and Grade 9 learners who are “moving on up” within our programs. It was a joyful day filled with community and celebration.

Special congratulations to:

  • Lucia Blunt, recipient of the Governor General’s Academic Medal, awarded to the graduating student with the highest academic average across Grades 11 and 12.

  • Alexis Carlson and Zachary Steingart-Baggott, recipients of PAC Academic and Leadership Scholarships for their achievements, leadership, and contributions to the KDS community.

Our graduates exemplify the independence, persistence, and curiosity that define online learners. We are so proud of their accomplishments and the thoughtful, self-directed learners they’ve become.

The day included a pizza picnic and cupcakes—generously sponsored by our fabulous PAC—and a full day of outdoor programming for K–9 students led by Wildsight. Local photographer McKenzie Jespersen was on site to capture beautiful moments of our graduates and their families.

Congratulations to the KDS Class of 2025—we’re so proud of you!
