The City of Fernie (population 5,500) is located in the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and is famous for its Fernie Alpine Resort, which is rated by Outdoor Magazine as the second best ski resort in Canada.

Fernie is a very popular destination for international students because of its outstanding ski and snowboard opportunities.  Before applying to attend Fernie Secondary School, prospective students should first contact the international program to ensure that space is still available.

Fernie has a beautiful, historic downtown area, a modern Aquatic Centre, an ice hockey arena, the Fernie Arts Station and trendy restaurants, coffee shops and stores.  Popular outdoor activities in summer include mountain biking, hiking, camping, fishing, golfing, and quading.  In winter, ski and snowboard takes over the city, but other winter activities include snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.  International students are welcome to join some of the many organizations in Fernie including the Fernie Alpine Ski Team, the Dolphins Swim Club, Fernie Minor Hockey, and the Fernie Skating Club.
